Scientists suspected that hydroxyurea might slow the progression of ALS by reducing the loss of motor neurons. Originally developed to fight certain types of cancer, hydroxyurea appeared to be ineffective in slowing the progression of the disease in a placebo-controlled trial of 24 ALS patients.
