Catholic rival's hockey game to benefit ALS research

The hockey game Tuesday night between all-boys Catholic high school rivals Brother Rice and University of Detroit Jesuit is being played for something more than bragging rights and league standings.

Watching the game will be Bloomfield Hills attorney Paul Apap, a 1983 Brother Rice graduate and hockey team alum, who was diagnosed five years ago with ALS, the debilitating neurological condition also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. Playing for the U-D Jesuit Cubs will be his youngest son, Teddy Apap, 16.

The game's admission proceeds will go to ALS research. And after the game, the Rice Warriors and the Cubs will have buckets of water, frigid from Zamboni machine ice scrapings, dumped over their heads. It's a take on the ALS ice bucket challenge that raised money and awareness for the disease last summer.

The game is at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Oak Park Ice Arena, 13950 Oak Park Blvd. There will be a raffle and donations accepted at the game. Admission is $5. Proceeds will go to the ALS Therapy Development Institute in Massachusetts.
