Founded by a pediatric oncology nurse who witnessed the devastating impact childhood cancer has on the entire family, Lighthouse Family Retreat was formed in 1999 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping families living through this horrific disease. Childhood cancer turns a family’s life upside down; weeks, months and years of treatment put a strain on daily routines, finances and family relationships. By providing seaside retreats at no cost to families, Lighthouse Family Retreat provides opportunities through strategic activities for families to rest, restore relationships, experience joy and ultimately find hope.

The American Cancer Society estimates that around 10,380 children, under the age of 15, will be diagnosed with cancer this year alone.  Childhood cancer is an illness that not only attacks these young victims, but their families as well. Research has repeatedly indicated that following a child’s cancer diagnosis, most parents experience severe stress symptoms. Lighthouse understands the needs and challenges these families face on a daily basis, and believes that families need time to get away from the hospital. Patients need to be able to think about things other than their sicknesses, their siblings need individual attention, and their parents need time to work on their marriage. Lighthouse seeks to meet each of these needs with compassion, understanding, and excellence. Serving up to 14 families living through childhood cancer per week, each seaside retreat is provided at no cost; lodging, meals, and activities are all included. The retreat program activities are tailored to meet the individual needs of the family unit. A typical day includes:
