Could anyone tell me if acupuncture could help ALS patients, especially with bulblar type? Some chinese traditional medicine methods suggest acupuncture as a form of therapy. Does anybody has had such treatment?

My wife was recently diagnosed with the bulbar form. She had been trying acupuncture for a few weeks when we found the following article, which is 5 years old, and gave it to her acupuncturist. Her symptoms aren't too bad yet and she's only had the 3 of the new treatments, so we don't really know if it's doing much. If nothing else, the treatments do seem to relax her. Interesting article.

I think we have found just regular massage more beneficial than accupunture. But this was the type of accupunture that involves electrical stimulation (maybe not called accupunture then); in which case, based on the 'overuse hypothesis' of ALS (or just the fact that overuse leads to fatigue), this stimulation-accupunture would seemingly not be the best idea. By the way, I'm refering to limb-onset ALS.

Jim, thank you for your reply and useful information. My wife is diagnosed with ALS for 2 years now, on a rather steady condition up to a couple of months ago when symptoms seem to become more acute (speech and swallowing) and thus we think of trying acupuncture. The article is very useful. By the way , we are trying the chinese herbs for 3 weeks now.no evident results yet.Good luck with your wife.
