Oakland A’s to Host ALS Awareness Day on Sept. 3 vs Yankees

A’s to present $150,000 check for ALS research prior to the game

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland A’s will donate $150,000 to ALS Therapy Development Institute (ALS TDI) when the team hosts ALS Awareness Day during the Monday, Sept. 3 game versus the New York Yankees.

“This day is in honor of Catfish Hunter, Gretchen Piscotty, Corey Reich, and all of the members of our family who have been impacted by this horrible disease. We are committed to raising awareness and vital funds for ALS research. Thank you to our fans, corporate partners, and the baseball community who contributed to our ALS fundraising efforts this season,” said A’s President Dave Kaval.

Prior to the 1:05 p.m. first pitch, the A’s will present a check for $150,000 to ALS TDI, the world’s first and largest nonprofit biotech research lab focused solely on ALS research. Longtime season ticket member Corey Reich, who has ALS, will join a representative from ALS TDI for the ceremonial first pitch. During the game, the club will play videos from Stephen Piscotty, ALS TDI’s chief executive officer Dr. Steve Perrin, Reich, and Kaval.

A’s outfielder Stephen Piscotty’s mother, Gretchen, passed away on May 6, 2018, following a yearlong battle with ALS. “This day means a great deal to me and my family. We are dedicated to finding a cure and ending this horrific disease,” said Piscotty.

ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Fans can purchase a special event ticket for ALS Awareness Day at athletics.com/als. Five dollars from every special event ticket sold will benefit ALS TDI. Fans can also contribute directly to ALS Awareness Day by making a donation at gofundme.com/piscottyals. Additionally, a percentage of proceeds from all Stephen Piscotty jersey and T-shirt sales from the season will go to ALS TDI.
