The Tony Tucker Golf 4 ALS tournament has been raising money to help end ALS for two decades. Even after a move across the country, they kept the tradition going with a successful golf tournament, silent auction, and dinner in Mims, Florida, an hour outside of Orlando.

The tournament started twenty years ago in Western Massachusetts, in honor of its namesake Tony Tucker. Tony was an award-winning salesman with Digital Equipment Corporation (now Hewlett-Packard) and father of three who passed away after living with ALS for 18 years. Tony himself originally decided ALS TDI was the organization he wanted to raise funds for because of the team’s dedication to finding a cure for ALS.

“He did a lot of research, when he was able to, about who to donate to and who to partner with,” says Walter Tucker, Tony’s brother who organizes the tournament with his wife, Linda. “And he felt strongly that because of Jamie Haywood and his situation with his brother, they were also as motivated as he was.”

In addition to the golf tournament, the event included a a silent auction and raffle after the golfers were done hitting the links.

This year’s Golf 4 ALS event raised close to $20,000 to support research at ALS TDI with over 80 people participating.

“We were pleased that many of the golfers expressed that they really want to make sure this tournament keeps going,” says Walter. “And next year they will help us find more people.”

The Tony Tucker Golf 4 ALS tournament is part of our “Driving for Life” program at ALS TDI, one of our longest running fundraising campaigns. Professional golfer Tom Watson created Driving for Life in 2003, after the diagnosis of fellow golfer Jeff Julian in 2001, as well as friend and caddie Bruce Edwards, both of whom passed from complications due to ALS in 2004.

The program makes it easy for anyone to organize a golf fundraiser to benefit ALS TDI’s research. Two more events are already on the calendar for this year in Oviedo, Florida and Parker, Colorado.
