In late 2017, Patty Haberstroh was diagnosed with ALS. Patty is a social worker and mother of four (grandmother of five), who has devoted her life to helping others in need.

On Christmas Day, 2017, the Haberstroh family was brainstorming ways to raise both funds and awareness for ALS Research at the ALS Therapy Development Institute (ALS TDI). That’s when they decided to start the #ALSPepperChallenge. The model is based on that of the Ice Bucket Challenge, but instead of bringing the cold in summer, would bring the heat all winter long.

The challenge? Once nominated, you have 48 hours to post a video of yourself eating a spicy pepper, nominate three people and donate to ALS TDI. Those who do not want to eat a pepper are encouraged to donate $100 instead.

The #ALSPepperChallenge has been taking the internet by storm. Check out some great examples of the challenge below.

As of 3/28/2018- The #ALSPepperChallenge has raised over $538,000 for ALS research at ALS TDI. We can't thank everyone who has taken the challenge and/or donated to the campaign enough for your ongoing support!
