ALS Ice Bucket Challenge
In the summer of 2014, millions of people around the world took the #ALSIceBucketChallenge to spread awareness and raise money for ALS research. The challenge raised an
estimated $135+ million worldwide
, with
$4 million
of that going to the ALS Therapy Development Institute (ALS TDI).
There is still no cure for ALS but every dollar raised gets us closer.
So, now what?
We do it all over again - every August until there is a cure for every single person living with ALS.

So, now what?
We do it all over again - every August until there is a cure for every single person living with ALS.
What did the $4 million accomplish?
Thanks to the $4 million raised through the Ice Bucket Challenge we were able to make significant strides in our work to find treatments for ALS. Here's what we invested in:
Precision Medicine Program
$2 million was invested in our
Precision Medicine Program
, allowing us to rapidly expand the program from 25 to 300 participants. The program now has 632 people enrolled.
Anti-CD40L Antibody Development
$2 million was invested into
anti-CD40L antibody development
. Now called AT-1501, it entered a phase 1 clinical trial in November of 2018, making ALS TDI the first nonprofit biotech in any disease to develop a potential treatment and bring it from our own lab, through FDA review and into clinical trial.
